Kinesitherapy

Movement therapy: exercises to restore strength and mobility.

MOVEMENT is LIFE! Your health and energy depend on movement. The official position of the World Health Organization (WHO) is that moderate physical activity is the best way to preserve and improve your health.

Kinesitherapy is therapy through movement (Greek: kinein, to move, kinesis, movement). It is the field of physical therapy concerned with the use of movement for the purpose of treatment, in order to restore the optimal functioning of the body. As part of physical therapy it represents one of the most important aspects of medical rehabilitation, namely the use of systematised movements of individual parts of the body or the whole body in the form of exercises, in order to preserve, restore, develop and replace the functions of the locomotor system.

The aim is to make the fullest possible use of all the patient’s potential, with an emphasis on the best possible recovery of the impaired function of the locomotor system. Kinesitherapy comprises active and passive exercises, and the active ones are divided into active-assisted, active-unassisted and active resistance exercises. It is applied in almost all medical specialties, but also preventively, and there are practically no absolute contraindications.

The skeletal system, the joints, the muscles and the peripheral and central nervous systems all take part in performing movement. Movement also engages the cardiovascular, respiratory and endocrine systems, which is why kinesitherapy is a compulsory part of rehabilitation in heart disease and respiratory disorders, as well as in nephrological and neurological patients.

Therapeutic effects

  • increased muscle strength and elasticity
  • increased range of motion in the joints
  • improved function of the cardiovascular system, respiratory organs, nervous system and digestive organs
  • improved circulation and accelerated local metabolism and recovery of the body
  • establishing correct movement patterns and motor activity

Forms of kinesitherapy we provide

  • teaching protective postures and movements
  • breathing exercises
  • relaxation exercises
  • kinesitherapy for cervical syndrome
  • kinesitherapy for lumbar syndrome
  • kinesitherapy for peripheral arthroses (gonarthrosis, coxarthrosis, arthrosis of the small joints of the hand)
  • kinesitherapy after bone fractures, sports and other injuries (resolving contractures)
  • exercises for osteoporosis
  • corrective gymnastics (dosed exercises, preventively for children predisposed to postural deformities, or therapeutically)
  • exercises for scoliosis
  • exercises for kyphosis
  • exercises to correct flat feet

Kinesitherapy must be professionally guided and dosed; it is carried out by a qualified or senior physiotherapist. Dosing requires knowledge of the general condition of the body: the cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous systems, psychological readiness, and the patient’s occupation and sporting history.

“In its effect, movement replaces every therapeutic means, whereas other medicinal means cannot replace movement.” (Tissot, 1781.)
